Last week I talked about how to terminate an employee in my blog How To Fire An Employee.  This week, I want to cover the logistical steps to take after you have had the termination conversation with the employee.

“Everybody loves Tony. He has been with the family business for years and is a great guy. Over the last several months, however, his job performance was slipping. He has been coming in late and when he is here, he isn’t performing at the expected level. He misses deadlines, forgets about meetings with customers, and is irritable. I have talked to him and told him that he needs to turn it around. I didn’t document anything because, well, you know, it was Tony. I think I have to fire him. What should I do?”

SET THE GOAL TO GOAL SET!

It’s the beginning of the year and many people are taking time to write down their goals for the coming year. I’ve always been the brunt of many jokes from my friends and family because I live by my planner. I write down my goals, have quarterly and monthly benchmarks and daily task lists. If I don’t get something done, I move it to the next day and make sure it gets done. I evaluate my goals regularly and change them as the world throws me the usual curve balls.
